Abstract

The aim of the study was to notify the risk factors that might affect cancer incidence in Yılmaz village in the district of Salihli. The study comprised 31 cancer cases diagnosed in the last 5 years associated with a control group composed by individuals of similar age and gender chosen by simple random sampling method. 128 persons were implicated in the study by mean of 1 risk case versus 3 control cases. The study was repeated in the village of Sart. 22 diagnosed cancer cases in the last 5 years and 71 persons as control were involved in the study. Questionnaires were applied to the cases and control groups to determine the socio-demographic characteristics, alimentary practices, smoke and alcohol use, the confirmation of any former cancer case and radiation risk in the family. Difference was found between Yılmaz and Sart villages, related to smoking and the use of filtered or unfiltered cigarettes, The ratio of vegetables or salad consumption as 4-5 times or more per week, fruits 4-5 times or more per week was higher in Sart Village. People of Yılmaz Village stated a higher fatty food/meals consumption than Sart Village.
