Estimation of cardiovascular risk severity in chronic periodontitis patients

AIM: Chronic periodontal lesion releases pro-inflammatory cytokines which might be accountable for cardiovascular disease. This study was undertaken to access cardiovascular risk by chronic periodontitis.
METHOD: The study group comprised of 100 patients with chronic periodontitis (CPD) and 50 healthy control without chronic periodontitis. Periodontal index of each tooth was calculated using Russel’s score. Carotid Intima Media thickness (CIMT) was assessed with a 7.5-MHz linear-array transducer and Ankle-Brachial Pressure Indices (ABPI) were measured with a continuous-wave Doppler machine, ultrasonic gel, and a sphygmomanometer. Full blood counts were performed and levels of serum lipid were determined by autoanalyzer whereas high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) were measured by ELISA in patients and control.
