The in vitro antimicrobial activity of algal extracts belonging to two species of microalgae; Chlorella vulgaris, Spirulina platensis and two species of seaweeds; Sargassum vulgare and Sargassum wightii were tested against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) clinical isolates. In this study, microtiter plate reader assay method was used to elucidate the effects. The extracts were prepared in four different solvents, out of which methanol extracts showed better and promising results. The results also confirmed the potential use of algal extracts as a source of antimicrobial compounds.
