Association of gallstones disease with non alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients presenting in a tertiary care hospitalSamia Kausar, Kiran Fatima, Fazeela Farid, Zunera Jehanzeb, Fatima Zia Sheikh, Mahnoor Shahzad. Abstract | Download PDF | | Post | Objective: To study the association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with gallstone disease (GSD).
Methodology: This cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out at the Departments of Medicine and Radiology, Pakistan Railway Hospital from 1st March 2021 to 30th September 2021 and included 104 patients with GSD. The data were extracted from the hospital’s electronic medical records. Patients’ demographics and ultrasound findings were recorded, and presence or absence of gallstones and fatty liver was noted.
Results: Out of 104 patients, 88 were females and 16 males. Mean age was 53.75±5.50 years. Frequency of NAFLD was 50% in patients with GSD with overall higher percentage in women. NAFLD was observed in patients with gallstones as well as in patients who had undergone cholecystectomy. Metabolic syndrome was closely related to both.
Conclusion: NAFLD is strongly associated with GSD especially in females.
