Abstract
Nepeta bindostana (Labiatae) an aromatic herb grows wild in marshy and damp places. Flower is purplish-pink. Calyx shows presence of non-glandular, branched and tufted hairs. Pedicel shows simple vascular structure, median strand crescentic, but continuous. Alcoholic extract shows the presence of triterpenes, flavonoides, tannins and sterols. The total ash, acid insoluble ash and water soluble are 4.75 percent, 1.73 percent and 2.75 present respectively. The extractive values in Ethanol and water are 9.2 present and 16.6 percent respectively. Nepeta has been shown to possess marked hypocholesteremic effect in Sus scrofa. This property is likely due to the presence of elements like Na, K, Ca, V, Mn and Cd which are claimed to protect against atherosclerosis.
