Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the growth and development by taking measurements of the

students attending the elementary education schools in Konya.

Methods: We measured the weight, height, triceps thickness, head circumference, abdominal circumference hip

circumference, mid-arm circumference, biiliac width, biacromial width and sitting height of 163 students of

different socieconomic status. We explored the relationship between these data and gender and the socioeconomic

status. The proffesions and the employment status of the fathers of the students are also evaluated seperately.

Results: We obtained the following results in both the high and low socioeconomic status group: mean weight 27.50 ±

6.31 and 24.23 ± 2.90; height 129.17 ± 6.25 and 124.58 ± 5.35; triceps thickness 10.68 ± 4.04 and 9.76 ± 2.96;

head circumference 51.79 ± 3.15 and 51.42 ± 1.28; abdominal circumference 59.49 ± 7.43 and 55.46 ± 2.97; hip

circumference 66.22 ± 6.71 and 62.59 ± 3.02; mid-arm circumference 18.68 ± 2.33 and 17.83 ± 4.49; sitting height

66.21 ± 3.30 and 63.63 ± 4.10; biiliac width 19.57± 2.07 and 18.41 ± 1.12; biacromial width: 29.30 ± 1.68 and

28.27 ± 1.39 respectively.

We observed that only the biacromial width was higher in girls, but other parameters were higher in boys attending

Marshal Mustafa Kemal Elementary Education School.

We found that abdominal circumference, hip circumference, mid-arm circumference, sitting height and triceps

thickness measurements were significantly higher in girls and other measurements (such as weight, height, head

circumference, biiliac width and biacromial width) were significantly higher in boys when the data was evaluated

according to the level of meaningfullness in each gender in Hasan Ali Yücel Elementary Education School.

Conclusion:We believe that our findings can be used as a reference study for follow up of growth and development in Elementary

Education students in Konya region. We suggest that this study may support other studies aiming to obtain standards for other

parameters for our country.
