Purpose: The aim of this study was to construct life tables for province and district areas of Malatya and Türkiye
in order to calculate the life expectancies, which are basic indicators of development and health.
Material and Method: The constructed life tables are abridged current life tables for province and district areas of
Malatya and Türkiye.
Results: While for 1980 the life expectancies at birth for Malatya were 73.80 years for females and 69.58 years for
males, for 2000 they were found as 76.81 and 73.38 years respectively. For Türkiye life expectancies at birth for
1980 were 65.91 years for females and 60.72 years for males. They were found as, 77.58 and 72.27 years for
females and males respectively for 2000. For both sexes the life expectancy at birth for Malatya and Türkiye
increased about 3.5 and 12 years respectively, between 1980 and 2000.
Conclusion: Life expectancy at birth for Türkiye was observed to be lower than it is for developed countries
between the years 1980 and 2000. This is due to the high infant mortality rate and high 0-4 age-specific death rate
in Türkiye.
