Abstract

Helminthes cause helminthiosis in human. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a disease resulting from the Echinococcus

granulosus larvae in intermediate hosts.

Radiologic and serologic methods are used for the diagnosis of CE. However, serologic methods may cause false

positive results via cross-reactions.

The aim of this study is to determine the seropositivity with Indirect hemagglutination (IHA) Technique for the

diagnosis of echinococcosis in helminthiosis. To achieve this, IHA test was performed for serum samples from

30 patients who have been diagnosed with intestinal helminthiosis. A total of 14 (47%) out of 30 samples were

found as seropositive with IHA; 5 (35 %) out of 14 in taeniosis, 8 (66 %) out of 12 in hymenolepiosis, 1 (25 %)

of 4 in ascariosis were also found as seropositive.

In conclusion; it should be remembered that, there may be false-positive results due to cross reactions by

serologic methods in patients with other parasitic diseases.

Key Words: Helmint, Indirect Hemagglutination (IHA) Technique, Cross Reactions
