Abstract

 

Suture materials is one of the basic subjects which every surgeon should know. The operation of suturing, sewing

together two sides of a wound, is probably one of the oldest in the history of medicine. Its purpose is to aid healing

as atraumatically as possible and it has mainly the mechanical effect of holding the wound edges together. Different

suture materials have been manufactured. Each material is suited to different types of tissue, but all must posses

certain characteristics: in particular, they must be inert, sterile, strong, elastic, non-capillary and visible. Knowledge

of suture materials provides rational manipulation and ideal wound healing.
