Frequency of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection and Influencing Factors

Abstract
Objective: To determine the frequency of lower respiratory tract infections in i nfants and to Investigate nutritional, environmental and socioeconomic risk factors.
Material and Method: The study is a prospective cohort study that was carried out in two Primary Health Units' areas, among all infants born between 01.11.1997 - 31.12.1997. Subjects of this study (204infants) were followed until they were one year old periodically every two months. In each visit, anthropometric measurement was carried out and information about respiratory symptoms during last two weeks was gathered. Relative risks of factors influencing lower respiratory disease and 95 % confidence intervals was calculated. The logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine factors related to lower respiratory tract infections.
Results: The lower respiratory trac t infections incidence was 1.80 episode/child year. Risk factors for lower respiratory tract infections were associated with mother's education, preterm birth, height for age and crowding in residence.
