Abstract
Objective: Chronic renai failure is progressive deterioration of all renal functions. Dialysis and renal transplantation are the treatment options in the end stage renal disease. Due to difficulties in finding donors for renal transplantation, long-term dialysis is the treatment of choice.
In this study, psychiatric morbidity and quality of life of patients having hemodialysis and Continue Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) have been measured.
Material and methods: Seventy eight patients with end stage renal failure were included. Fifty three patients had long term hemodialysis while 25 had CAPD Beck depression Inventory and State-tra/t Anxiety Inventories were used to assess psychiatric morbidity. To measure quality of life of these patients Sheehan Quality of Life scale was used. There was a statistically significant difference between both group for psychiatric morbidity and quality of life scale on behalf of CAPD. Conclusion: It seems necessary to apply alternative treatments to hemodialysis in order to protect mental health and quality of life of patients with end stage renal disease.
Key words: Hemodialysis Continue Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), Psychiatric morbidity, Quality of life
