In the last few decades, a lot of progress has been made in intemeuronal signal transmission and integration. There is an explosion of new information on neuropeptides, receptor subtypes, and G proteins. G proteins function as most important communication intermediaries in the cell. Stimulation of a G protein coupling receptor initiates a cascade of biochemical processes that produce both intra and intercellular signals. G proteins couple between cell surface receptors to a variety of enzymes and ion channels. In this review the role of G proteins of transmembrane signalling in central nervous system is emphasized.
