A Comparison of Anxiolytic Efficacy of Midazolam and Diazepam with Placebo Used as Premedicant

Abstract
We have compared the anxiolytic effect of midazolam and diazepam with placebo. 45 patients, ASA I or II, in three groups were studied. Pretreatment evaluation was performed on the day before surgery using measurements of subjective (Anxiety Visual Analogue Scale-AVAS) and behavioural (Hamilton Anksiety Test-HAT) variables. At the operating theatre, patients received 0.08 mg/kg i.m. midazolam, 0.15 mg/kg diazepam i.m. or placebo. Tests were repeated 45 minutes after premedication. We found that diazepam and placebo are equally effective and midazolam is more anxiolitic than diazepam and placebo.
