Objective: To evaluate the thrombotic tendency among metastatic and non-metastatic breast cancer (BC) patients in Khartoum state.
Methodology: This quantitative observational study cases recruited from Khartoum Oncology Specialized center from Dec 2020 to Feb 2021. Convenience sampling method was used for female patients diagnosed with BC (metastatic and non-metastatic) and for healthy controls without BC from the same geographic area. Sociodemographic information, clinical information and laboratory investigations were recorded. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.
Results: A total of 60 women were included, 32 non metastatic BC, 18 women with metastatic BC and 10 healthy control. PT was significantly longer among non-metastatic BC patients that used more than 10 treatment doses (p=0.01), with significant difference in platelets levels between different types of chemotherapy regimen (p=0.009) in metastatic BC. There was significantly higher level of fibrinogen in metastatic (p=0.017) and non-metastatic (p=0.038) BC with significantly lower PTT in metastatic (p=0.042) and PT in non-metastatic (p=0.011) when compared to healthy control.
Conclusion: Metastatic and non-metastatic BC demonstrated a high thrombotic risk.
Key words: Metastatic breast cancer, non-metastatic breast cancer, thrombosis.
