Penile and bladder agenesis concurrent with unilateral cryptorchidism in a three-day-old Balami lamb: a case report

Aim: This case aimed to report penile and bladder agenesis and some congenital defects found in a three-day-old Balami lamb, lambed unassisted. The lamb was presented to the Bunza area veterinary clinic in Kebbi State with complaints of a short lower jaw, absence of the penis, shallow breathing, and inability to stand and suckle from the dam.
Methods: Physical examination revealed a short lower jaw, preputial opening, dyspnea, froth in the mouth, and unilateral cryptorchidism. The lamb died during physical examination and was subsequently evaluated using X-ray and postmortem examination. Tissue samples from the testis and the protruded abdominal mass were collected and submitted for histopathological analysis.
Results: Radiographic findings confirmed a short lower jaw and fused interdigital spaces. Post-mortem findings revealed froth in the trachea, pulmonary oedema, cardiomegaly, hepatomegaly, hydronephrosis of both kidneys, the presence of both ureters, penile and bladder agenesis, and the prepuce fused with the abdominal muscles. There was a protruded tissue mass on the abdominal muscle. Unilateral cryptorchidism with a bipartite scrotum in an underdeveloped testicle.
Conclusion: It was concluded that exposure to toxic substances (pollutants), genetic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, infections, and other diseases could be considered possible causes of this case.
