AIM: The aim of this study was to compare and examine the relationship of perceived social support and depresssive symptoms in older Turkish persons who lived in the community.
METHODS: The research is astudy of descriptive characteristic. This study was conducted between 1 February - 20 May 2007. The study involved elderly adults aged 65 years or older living in Samsun, Alanlı district. The sample group (We consecutivitely) identified 62 people who were visited at their home at the Alanlı village in Samsun. Data were collected by interviewing the subjects and by using "Socio-Demographic Information Form", "The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS)" and "Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)". In this study, t test, correlation analysis, mann whitney U and kruskall wallis (KW) analysis were performed.
RESULTS: Elderly individual were mean age of 70.70±8.01 years (min=46 age, max=84 age). Elderly individual were %60.9 male and %39.4 female. In this study, older people who reside in their own homes of Samsun were surveyed for depression with Geriatric Depression Scale form (GDS) The mean score was 11.09± 6.20 and Social support subscale scores was 32.62±65.
CONCLUSION: In this research, it was found fever depression symptoms and more perceived social support at older people.
